Hello AANA Members,
As summer closes and we embark on the final quarter of the 2020, I wanted to provide a summary of outcomes from the August AANA Board of Directors meetings.
I am proud of the level of dedication, passion and selfless commitment of our AANA Board. It is because of our collective vision for the future that we are able to make large strides in a positive direction for AANA and what follows is the culmination of their efforts:
AANA21: As we continue to navigate the uncertainty of the pandemic, we are committed to celebrating AANA’s 40th Anniversary in 2021. We are exploring a variety of options to ensure a safe attendee experience. Look for an official announcement in the coming weeks.
Specialty Day: As you have likely heard, the AAOS Annual Meeting has been postponed until September 2021. AANA and AOSSM have decided to continue their Specialty Day partnership and will be providing an online education experience available March 17-18, 2021. Preparations continue to ensure a thorough program. The AANA Innovation Lecture at Specialty Day will still be featured on the online platform. More updates are to come. AANA will also be hosting a half-day session at the AAOS Annual Meeting in August 2021 to provide additional value to those members who will attend the AAOS Annual Meeting.
AANA Diversity & Inclusion Task Force: AANA prides itself on its welcoming and inclusive environment and believes it is critical that we identify all areas where we can improve and grow. The Diversity & Inclusion Task Force was officially launched. The 11 dedicated individuals have accepted the charge to identify the diversity strengths, weaknesses and opportunities within the organization and examine ways AANA can meet the needs of our diverse membership.
Biologic Association (BA): The BA membership was launched as a new AANA Member benefit. Every AANA Member can log into the BA’s website and take advantage of the benefits that are available. As this organization matures and gains traction, it will focus on building awareness, growing membership, advancing research and delivering education in the area of orthobiologics. AANA is proud to support these initiatives in collaboration with several other subspecialty organizations, including AOSSM, ICRS, AMSSM, AAPM&R, Interventional Orthobiologics Foundation and the ON Foundation.
Practice Service Organization (PSO): I’m happy to report that this project continues to gain momentum. We launched the new Comp Recovery partnership (learn more) and the Fellowship Education Series (learn more). We are also looking to launch a web presence management solution in late 2020.
Member Engagement: The growth of our organization is a priority, but so is the engagement of our membership. We want to make sure we’re constantly delivering value to our members; therefore, AANA is launching a focused member engagement program that begins immediately with the new DocMatter platform.
Candidate Membership: Voting is now open to Active, Senior and International Members to approve the addition of a new membership category: Candidate Member. This category is specifically for those two years post-residency or post-fellowship, a steppingstone to the Active Membership. This new category will allow AANA to provide early career-specific benefits and resources. Active, Senior and International Members, please vote before September 30, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. CDT.
At this Board of Directors meeting, we kicked off the Critical Conversations Series, exploring membership, education and fundraising. This series of productive discussions highlighted three areas of the organization and provided time for the Board to focus and examine in a more critical manner. This allowed for time to deep dive, brainstorm and identify action items. Despite a paucity of face-to-face meetings, the Board was exceptionally productive and we are executing, with the help of AANA staff, an unprecedented number of initiatives.
I feel fortunate to be surrounded by amazingly talented and dedicated individuals. I am honored to be leading such an exceptional group. I will provide an update in November after our fall Board of Directors meeting. I look forward to closing out 2020 (for many reasons!) and we have a lot of work to accomplish between now and December.
Thank you for your support – stay safe and healthy, and as always, please reach out to me directly at BrianColeMD@aana.org with suggestions or concerns.
