AANA Announces the 2025-2026 Presidential Line and Newly Elected Board Members
John D. Kelly IV, M.D., FAANA has been named AANA President for the 2025-2026 term, followed by Kevin F. Bonner, M.D., FAANA as First Vice President and Joseph C. Tauro, M.D., FAANA as Second Vice President.
Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery, Director of Shoulder Surgery and Co-Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program are among the many roles Dr. Kelly holds at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine – alongside his unofficial role as resident stand-up comedian for his colleagues, family and friends. His clinical expertise in shoulder arthroscopy and his dedication to physician wellness have led to numerous publications and national recognition. Over the course of his career, Dr. Kelly has earned several distinctions, including being named a Best Doctor in America (2015–2024), one of Philadelphia Magazine’s Top Docs (2010–2024), one of America’s Most Compassionate Doctors (2011), being inducted into the Penn Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and recipient of the Neer Award for shoulder research.
Dr. Kelly is a familiar and respected figure among AANA members, having served in many leadership roles. He was the 2018 AANA Annual Meeting Program Chair and has been a faculty member for numerous AANA lab courses, including the AANA/SOMOS Shoulder Course, Advanced Procedure-Specific Knee/Shoulder Course and most recently, the AANA/AMECRA/SLARD Knee and Shoulder Course. He has contributed to nearly every AANA Committee and played an instrumental role in several strategic initiatives that have shaped the association's direction and growth.
In his clinical work, Dr. Kelly is widely known for his operative and nonoperative management of complex shoulder pathology, including rotator cuff disease and instability. He is a trusted expert for both athletes and patients and is especially noted for his commitment to resident education and physician mental health. His thoughtful, compassionate leadership along with his passion for arthroscopy, is expected to guide AANA with vision and purpose in the year ahead.
Dr. Bonner specializes in shoulder and knee surgery at the Jordan-Young Institute in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he also serves as Director of the Jordan Research Foundation. He is a Professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School and has earned a reputation for excellence in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. With over 25 years of experience, his career includes training at the Hospital for Special Surgery and serving as Chief of Sports Medicine at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, where he was also Team Orthopaedic Surgeon for the U.S. Navy SEALs. Dr. Bonner’s research, teaching and dedication to evidence-based innovation have solidified his standing as a leader in orthopaedics and arthroscopy.
Within AANA, Dr. Bonner has served in numerous leadership roles, including Treasurer and Chair of the Education Committee. He was the Program Co-Chair for the 2021 AOSSM/AANA Combined Annual Meeting as well as Program Chair for the 2022 AANA Annual Meeting and has also been Chair/Co-Chair of numerous AANA Lab Courses throughout the years. He currently serves as Chair of the AANA/AOSSM Strategic Alliance Task Force, helping to advance collaborative initiatives that benefit both organizations. His clinical expertise, thoughtful leadership and unwavering support of orthopaedic education continue to drive AANA’s mission forward.
Dr. Tauro joins the presidential line as Second Vice President, bringing decades of experience in orthopaedic surgery, education and innovation. Practicing at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute (AOSMI) in New Jersey, Dr. Tauro is especially recognized for his expertise in shoulder and knee reconstruction. An AANA member since 1992, Dr. Tauro started teaching as an Associate Master Instructor almost immediately and became a Master Instructor in 1996, teaching many Shoulder Arthroscopy courses since then. He has been Chair of AANA’s Communication and Technology Committee and Learning Center Committee where he introduced hybrid learning featuring prelab online didactic teaching to maximize motor skills learning when in the lab.
Dr. Tauro joined the AANA Board of Directors in 2020 and was AANA Secretary from 2023 to 2025. A trailblazer in arthroscopic shoulder surgery and simulation training, Dr. Tauro was instrumental in launching AANA’s simulation partnership with VirtaMed. His leadership helped build curricula across multiple joints and guide the development of a landmark study comparing low-fidelity, high-fidelity and cadaveric models in rotator cuff repair training. His long-standing commitment to surgical education makes him a valuable asset to AANA’s leadership team.
