MAST Program Overview

The Military Advanced Surgical Treatment (MAST) Program is a collaboration between AANA and the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS) designed to expand arthroscopic education and training opportunities for military Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Through hands-on training, scholarships, mentorship and research support, MAST connects military surgeons with AANA education and expertise to strengthen surgical skills and support continued professional development.

Hands-on orthopaedic surgical training

AANA/MAST Annual Meeting Scholarship

The AANA/MAST Annual Meeting Scholarship provides military Orthopaedic Residents and Surgeons the opportunity to attend the AANA Annual Meeting. Funding supports registration, travel and lodging for selected recipients.

Ideal applicants include active-duty military Orthopaedic Residents with a career interest in arthroscopy and active-duty military Orthopaedic Surgeons.

AANA Orthopaedic Learning Center (OLC) Course Scholarship

Take your training into the lab with support to attend an AANA hands-on lab course at the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Rosemont, Illinois.

The AANA OLC Course Scholarship provides active-duty military Orthopaedic Surgeons with access to hands-on, subspecialty-focused surgical training through an eligible AANA lab course. Priority is given to junior staff physicians.

AANA Visiting Professor Program

The AANA Visiting Professor Program brings AANA expertise directly to military Orthopaedic departments.

Selected Military Treatment Facilities host an AANA Visiting Professor for one week of in-person education. Host programs develop an educational experience that may incorporate surgical mentorship, clinical experience, cadaveric training, journal clubs and opportunities to share military culture and practice.

AANA/SOMOS Mini Fellowship Program

The AANA/SOMOS Mini Fellowship Program provides active-duty military Orthopaedic Surgeons with an immersive, two-week apprenticeship alongside a senior AANA faculty member.

Participants gain exposure to clinical and surgical practice as well as supplementary hands-on and cadaveric training, with funding provided for travel and lodging.

MAST Research Grants

Advancing Research With Military and Civilian Impact

MAST supports orthopaedic research addressing questions relevant to military service members, athletes and civilian patients.

Research supported through the program has explored ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic skills training, orthobiologics, hip arthroscopy, shoulder instability and cartilage preservation. From 2023–2025, $675,000 in MAST research funding was awarded across seven projects.

AANA/SOMOS Course

AANA and SOMOS have partnered to provide dedicated arthroscopy education for military Orthopaedic Surgeons since 2012.

The annual AANA/SOMOS Course provides active-duty military Orthopaedic Surgeons with an intensive, hands-on surgical training experience at the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Rosemont, IL. Registration is complimentary, with travel and housing provided for selected attendees.

The 2027 course will focus on knee arthroscopy, combining hands-on cadaveric training with lectures, interactive case discussions, simulation and instruction in common and complex knee procedures.
