AANA provides general coding information. The information contained within these recommendations has been vetted by surgeons experienced with the individual surgical techniques and AMA CPT© coding policies. Coding information frequently, and the information provided by AANA may not always reflect the latest changes or be appropriate for all uses. We strongly recommend surgeons reference appropriate commercial payer policies, CMS NCCI manual and AMA CPT coding manuals when making final determination on coding decisions for their individual practices.

AANA, in collaboration with AOSSM, has released a new downloadable support letter that surgeons may include with surgical requests involving arthroscopic subacromial decompression (SAD). Led by Advocacy Committee Chair Dr. Patrick Joyner, the letter reflects current clinical evidence supporting SAD for mechanical impingement and, in select cases, as an adjunct to rotator cuff repair. Current indications associated with SAD – such as os acromiale, tumor, and fracture – are not supported by the available clinical evidence, these inconsistencies have contributed to confusion during peer-to-peer reviews and administrative denials. This resource is intended to help surgeons clearly document evidence-based indications, improve reporting accuracy, support productive peer-to-peer discussions and is endorsed by the 2026 AANA Presidential Line.
